Hidemi Shigekawa is a Professor of Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, University of Tsukuba, Japan. He obtained Ph. D from the University of Tokyo. When he was an assistant professor of the Department of Applied Physics at the University of Tokyo, he worked as a visiting researcher at the Bell Labs beamline of National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) in the Brookhaven National Laboratory (NY, USA).

After returning to Japan, he started working with scanning probe microscopy (SPM). He has been interested in nanoscale science and has been developing new microscopy techniques by combining SPM with quantum optics technologies.

He received the Medal with Purple Ribbon for those works in 2019. He is now the President of the Japan Society of Vacuum and Surface Science.
